Philip Rivers Likely To Have Offseason Surgery For Plantar Plate Rupture

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Colts QB Philip Rivers will likely need to undergo surgery after the season to repair a plantar plate rupture in his foot.

Rivers’ injury was originally described as a “toe” injury. Rapoport says this injury could also be described as a really bad turf toe.

Rivers suffered the injury two weeks ago and was able to play last week. He has played through a number of injuries over the year, so it appears as though this will be something he manages over the remainder of the season.

Rivers, 38, is a former first-round pick of the Giants back in 2004. He was later traded to the Chargers in return for Eli Manning.

Rivers just played out the final year of his five-year, $99 million contract that included $65 million guaranteed and made a base salary of $11 million for the 2019 season. The Colts signed him to a one-year contract this past March, which means he’ll once again be an unrestricted free agent in 2021.

In 2020, Rivers has appeared in 11 games for the Colts and completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 2,978 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions.

We have him included in our Top 50 – 2021 Free Agents list.
