Report: Dak Prescott Won’t Take Part In Virtual Offseason Program Without New Contract

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, citing a source with knowledge of the situation, reports that Cowboys QB Dak Prescott will not take part in the virtual offseason program unless he has a long-term deal in place.

The offseason programs is voluntary and Prescott has yet to sign his franchise tender for the 2020 season.

The Cowboys have a new head coach in place after hiring Mike McCarthy, so I’m sure they’d prefer to have Prescott participating in the offseason program. Although, Dallas retained Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator, so it’s not as though Prescott will be starting from scratch in terms of the team’s offensive system.

A few weeks ago, Ed Werder reported that discussions between the Cowboys and Prescott on a contract extension have not been contentious so far. While Werder’s source told him they wouldn’t say a resolution to a new deal is close, they did say Prescott should emerge as the NFL’s highest-paid player.

The two parties were rumored to be closing on a four-year contract with an annual salary of $35 million. However, there have been no updates in nearly a month regarding the status of negotiations.

Dallas is reportedly pushing for a five-year contract with Prescott while he prefers a shorter deal that will allow him to test the open market again in the coming years.

Prescott, 26, is a former fourth-round pick of the Cowboys back in 2016. He’s entering the final year of his four-year, $2.72 million contract and was in line to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

The franchise tag will cost the Cowboys $26.824 million fully guaranteed for the 2020 season.

In 2019, Prescott appeared in all 16 games and completed 65.1 percent of his passes for 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He has also rushed for 277 yards and three touchdowns for Dallas. Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 10 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players.

We’ll have more regarding the Cowboys and Prescott as the news is available.

  1. So happy to hear that Dallas is having problems. A rare piece of good news these days! 🙂 Just goes to show how selfish today’s players are. He is refusing to log onto his computer (with no injury risk whatsoever) because he is offended that Dallas “only” has offered him $26M for one season?! If I were Jerry Jones I would cut him right now just for suggesting something as ridiculous as that. I get when they hold out because they’re afraid of getting hurt, but there’s no excuse for this one.
