Saints HC Sean Payton told reporters on Thursday that offseason acquisition SÂ Jairus Byrd is undergoing surgery on his back today, per Mike Triplett.
Payton did say that Byrd is expected to be a full go for training camp, which is at least a good sign.
This is hardly the type of news the Saints want to hear after they signed Byrd to a six-year, $54 million contract that includes $28 million guaranteed.
Thankfully, the injury doesn’t sound like anything major, so hopefully this will be the last we hear regarding Byrd’s back moving forward.
Last year, Byrd totaled 48 tackles, 4 sacks, one interception and a forced fumble for the Bills defense. Pro Football Focus has Byrd rated as the No. 8 safety in the league last season.
