AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets

Bills

  • Bills HC Sean McDermott said Thursday that QB Josh Allen is resuming throwing and “isn’t too far off.” (Joe Buscaglia)
  • According to Josina Anderson, the Rams had discussions with the Bills about trading for an unnamed defensive lineman before the deadline. This was before the Rams acquired Dante Fowler from the Jaguars.
  • For what it’s worth, Bills DE Jerry Hughes came up as a potential trade candidate this year.

Dolphins

Dolphins HC Brock Osweiler said he hopes to continue as the team’s starting quarterback when Ryan Tannehill returns from his shoulder injury.

I think your mentality in this league is when you get your opportunity to play, you never give that guy his job back,” Osweiler said, via Safid Deen of the Sun-Sentinel.

Jets

Jets GM Mike Maccagnan explained that he doesn’t think the team is sacrificing wins this year in order to develop QB Sam Darnold

I don’t know if you go in with the mindset of, ‘Hey, we’re just going to write this one off,‘” Maccagnan said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN. “We’re like everybody else: We want to win football games. … It’s not enjoyable to go out and lose games every week.

“I think anybody who has gone through that, or is currently going through that, it’s not a great experience. That’s not what we get paid to do. But I do think that you’re going to have to go through that maturation process at some point in time with the quarterback.”

  • Maccagnan said he was in contact with every team outside the AFC East and was “on the phone quite a bit” leading up to the trade deadline, but didn’t find any deals that made sense and could them in short/long term. (Rich Cimini)
