AFC East Notes: Bills, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots

Bills

  • Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield said he’s scheduled to meet with the Bills Friday night for a formal interview. (Chris Brown)
  • When asked if he prefers a mobile or pocket passer, Bills GM Brandon Beane explained that you have to be able to “make plays from the pocket,” and you want a “good blend” of both qualities: “In this game, you have plays where it’s third-and-9 and you can’t run for it, and you got to be able to make plays from the pocket. We know how close these games are. You look at the Super Bowl. Most of these games come down to three or four plays, and a lot of them at the very end. You’re going to eventually have to make plays from the pocket. You can’t just be a run-around guy, but you can’t be a statue back there either. A good blend is nice.” (Mike Rodak)

Dolphins

Jets

  • Rich Cimini of ESPN could see the Jets moving up from No. 6 to acquire the No. 1 overall pick from the Browns after Jets GM Mike Maccagnan said he would have “no qualms about potentially moving up.
  • Cimini also mentions that the Jets would likely trade up if they are unable to sign QB Kirk Cousins in free agency.

Patriots

  • Drew Rosenhaus the agent for Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, mentioned during an interview with Pro Football Talk on Friday that there’s still no timetable for a decision from his client regarding whether he’ll return for the 2018 season.
  • This comes a few days after Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported the expectation is that Gronkowski will return for 2018 season after weighing retirement and his future. Rapoport added that he hasn’t spoken to a single person who believes Gronkowski will retire this offseason. (NFLTR)
  • Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald writes that the Patriots should look into trading WR Brandin Cooks to the Giants for WR Odell Beckham Jr, who is reportedly looking for $20 million per year as part of a long-term deal.
  • Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta said that he’s spoken to “several” Patriots’ scouts. (Karen Guregian)
