AFC Notes: Baker Mayfield, Browns, Ravens, Titans

Baker Mayfield

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports that the Browns and QB Baker Mayfield are open to discussing a potential extension and seeing where talks go from there. However, Fowler says that talks are currently “status quo” right now as the Browns have largely been on vacation.

According to Fowler, the Browns want to keep their core group of players intact moving forward and this includes CB Denzel Ward, G Wyatt Teller and RB Nick Chubb.

The Browns reportedly believe Mayfield’s 2019 season was an “aberration” and they believe in him as a player. Even so, Fowler says Cleveland probably doesn’t want to go crazy with his next contract.

Ravens

Ravens HC John Harbaugh is excited to watch the CB group battle it out in camp, which happens to be one of the team’s most talented and deepest positions on the roster.

I think that’s a good term – heated,” he said, via RavensWire. “[I expect it to be] absolutely heated. I think [pass game coordinator/secondary] Coach [Chris] Hewitt and [defensive backs] Coach [D’Anton] Lynn have done a tremendous job with those guys throughout the course of the whole offseason, and those guys have responded very well. So, I’m looking forward to that competition that you’re talking about in training camp. It’s a very talented group, and the best players will be the guys that play the best. I can’t wait to watch it play out.”

Titans

Titans’ second-year DL Larrell Murchison feels his rookie season went well and is hopeful to find a larger role in their defense going forward.

“The first year, it was an eye-opener,” said Murchison, via Jim Wyatt of the team’s official site. “You see a lot of different things you haven’t experienced before. But being around a good team with veteran leaders, it went well as far as learning different things and soaking up things from the other guys. My mindset now is just to continue to prepare, to put in the work, and to find a role and try and sharpen every aspect of my game.”

Titans DL coach Terrell Williams said Murchison must continue developing his body and technique and has been pleased with his performance so far in their offseason program.

“Just getting bigger and stronger in the weight room (is key) and just learning the technique the best he can. He (has been) doing really good in those individual drills, and I am looking forward to seeing what he looks like when we put pads on in training camp,” said Williams.

Murchison said he’s learning from Titans DL Jeffery Simmons and is excited to play alongside DL Denico Autry and DE Bud Dupree.

“I just want to improve my overall game,” Murchison said. “I liked some of the stuff I did on first and second down, but it’s about improving in every aspect. I know I have to be better in the pass rush, and rundowns. It’s been great building relationships with my teammates. I just want to improve in everything, and find a role in this defense and embrace it.”
