Bills
Bills QB Josh Allen and WR D.J. Moore, who was acquired from the Bears this offseason, have been making headlines for the quick connection they’ve been building in training camp. Moore said the two have had “constant communication” throughout the offseason.
“[Before camp] he was in LA, I was moving houses and selling houses, so … just getting out here early and just going back and forth like we are,” Moore said, via Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN. “Constant communication on the field between the two days, and we’re just [going to] keep building.”
Allen mentioned that he’s loosened up his approach in throwing to Moore, which seems to have improved their rapport.
“I feel myself trying to be perfect when I’m throwing to him in some of the routes on air,” Allen said. “And [on Wednesday] I walked up to him and said I’m just going to throw it. I’m going to pick a spot and let it go. I’m not trying to aim it anymore. And I feel like once I said that things kind of clicked for us. And each day that goes by, we are going to get more comfortable with each other.”
Dolphins
Malik Willis joins the Dolphins as their new starting quarterback and embarks on his first year under OC Bobby Slowik. When asked about learning Slowik’s offense, Willis said it’s “very similar” to what he did with the Packers and is working through all the new terminology involved.
“I think it’s pretty cool. It was very similar. Obviously, we had worked through a couple kinks and figuring out just the terminology sort of thing, and that was easy to get through. It just takes reps and continuous saying it and being in the huddle and actually going through it, and that’s whatever you do. Obviously, I had three or four offenses before this one, and it’s the same process. I think it was cool to have OTAs to work on that and figure out the differences between offenses like, okay, this is the same route, but they teach it differently here, and the receivers know it from a different terminology standpoint, so that’s the biggest thing. I think I’m at a good place and we get to go out at camp and get more reps at,” Willis said, via the team’s site.
Willis is excited to be at training camp, calling it like the “first day of school.”
“I think it’s exciting. I mean, I miss football. I get bored, obviously. You’re just talking about throwing on air and that’s not fun at all, but it’s a method to the madness. It is like the first day of school. It’s the first time we get back and see all our buddies, all our coworkers, I guess, it’s a business. But all the guys are excited to go, and we’ve just got to continue that up throughout camp, through the preseason and taking it into the season, just building confidence and momentum.”
As for stepping into a leadership role, Willis said he wants to be both vocal and lead by example.
“I feel like you can be both. I feel like there’s moments sometimes that you need to be both. You have to understand people. Obviously, some people can handle being talked to a certain type of way and others can’t, so you got to talk to them a certain type of way. And then sometimes nothing needs to be said because they already know what they messed up on and belittling them or just reiterating it might not be beneficial to help us succeed. I feel like it’s just a time and place type thing.”
Jets
Jets RT Armand Membou has been one of the early standouts of training camp for New York so far, stonewalling nearly every opponent he faces. It’s not a surprise to HC Aaron Glenn who expected the 2025 first-round pick to make a big stride in Year 2.
“Well, on the exit meeting [last January], and when I had a chance to just talk to him one-on-one, man, I just knew that he was going to come back in the offseason program and just be like stone faced and ready to go, and he was exactly that,” Glenn said via Jack Bell of the team website. “And man, he has this look on his face right now, to where every rep matters, every rep counts. And man, I just want to improve on every rep. So last year, I thought he did a really good job. I really did. This year I’m expecting a lot from that player. And the reason why is the way he’s operating. Like he’s operating at a high level right now.”
Membou had a strong rookie season, too, but he said he came out of it knowing that he could be so much better. Like many other players in New York this summer, he also talked about feeling the need to lift the Jets out of their decade-long slump.
“We got to make things change, to create change,” he said. “So I felt my mindset going into the offseason, especially me having my own full offseason to work instead of doing predraft and stuff, just to make sure it gets better and make sure I can make a jump my second year in my game.
“I feel like I played solid [last season], well, for a rookie. But at the same time, I just feel like I also need to be way more consistent if I want to go to the place where I want to go. So, I feel like for me, just my overall consistency in my game, and just keep on building my technique.”
