Arian Foster Has “Severe” Groin Injury That Will Require Surgery, Likely To Return This Year

Update:

John McClain reports that Texans RB Arian Foster does, in fact, have a severe groin injury that will require surgery. Although, the expectation is that Foster should be able to return during the season.

Tania Ganguli of ESPN first reported that Texans RB Arian Foster sustained a groin injury last night and didn’t return to practice.

According to Jayson Braddock, Foster’s groin injury is “serious in nature” and his source has told him that it “should require surgery.” On top of that, Braddock’s source added that Foster could be candidate to be placed on injured with the designation to return.

Ganguli adds that Foster has a “significant injury” and there’s a concern right now that it could require surgery.

It’s worth mentioning that Texans HC Bill O’Brien has yet to confirm the nature of Foster’s groin injury, but it sounds like he could miss at least a portion of the season if these reports end up being accurate.

Should Houston elect to place Foster on the short-term injured reserve list, they would be without him for the first six weeks of the season.

As of now, the Texans have Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, Chris Polk and Kenny Hilliard on their roster at running back.

Foster, 28, has another two years remaining on his five-year, $43.5 million contract that included $20.75 million guaranteed. He stands to make base salaries of $6 million and $6.5 million over the final two years of the agreement.

In 2014, Foster appeared in 13 games for the Texans and ran for 1,246 yards on 260 carries (4.8 YPC) to go along with 38 receptions for 327 yards receiving and 13 total touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 12 running back out of 57 qualifying players.
