Broncos Rookie QB Drew Lock Could Open Season On IR

Broncos HC Vic Fangio said that rookie QB Drew Lock could open the season on injured reserve after suffering a severely sprained right thumb.

“Obviously because it’s his throwing hand and a thumb, that’s a pretty serious injury for a quarterback,” Fangio said, via Jeff Legwold of ESPN. “It will be some time before we know exactly where he’s at and how much time he would miss.”

When asked specifically about the possibility of placing Lock on injured reserve, Fangio said: “Yeah, it could be if we don’t think he can play for a while. The bad thing about it is because of the injury he can’t do much.”

NFL teams can designate two players to return from injured reserve in the second half of the year, but it’s rare for a team to bring back a backup quarterback, barring an injury.

Lock, 22, was selected with the No. 42 overall pick in the second round of this year’s draft by the Broncos out of Missouri. He agreed to a four-year, $7,010,820 rookie contract including a $3,118,776 signing bonus.

During his four-year college career at Missouri, Lock threw for 12,193 yards, 99 touchdowns and 39 interceptions.  He also added 437 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.
