Chargers WR Stevie Johnson Has Torn Meniscus, Unclear If It’s Season Ending

Update:

Ian Rapoport reports that Chargers WR Stevie Johnson will get a second opinion for his meniscus tear and then undergo surgery.

Johnson’s timetable — either weeks or months — will ultimately be determined by once he’s undergone the procedure.

One positive for Johnson is that his injury reportedly puts him in a similar situation to Jaguars first-round CB Jalen Ramsey, whose surgery was was not season-ending, according to Rapoport.

Mike Silver of NFL Media reports that Chargers WR Stevie Johnson suffered a torn meniscus and will undergo surgery at some point in the near future.

According to Silver, it’s still unclear if this will end Johnson’s 2016 season.

Johnson was carried off the practice field on Sunday after going down with a non-contact right knee injury, so it was clear that this could be a serious issue.

With Johnson likely to miss at least an extended portion of the season, it’s possible they could be in the market to add another receiver. As of now, the Chargers have Dontrelle Inman, Tyrell Williams, Javontee Herndon, Isaiah Burse and Dom Williams behind starters Keenan Allen and Travis Benjamin.

Johnson, 30, is in the second year of his three-year, $10.5 million contract and stands to make base salaries of $2.9 million and $3.5 million over the next two years.

In 2015, Johnson appeared in 10 games for the Chargers and recorded 45 receptions for 497 yards receiving and three touchdowns. Pro Football Focus had him rated as the No. 62 receiver out of 121 qualifying players.
