Colts Releasing QB Brian Hoyer

According to Ian Rapoport, the Colts are releasing QB Brian Hoyer on Saturday.

According to OverTheCap.com, releasing Hoyer will free up $3 of available cap space while creating $2 million in dead money.

Hoyer was owed a $2 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year (Sunday), which explains why they opted to make this move now.

Hoyer, 34, originally signed on with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent out of Michigan State back in 2009. He spent three years in New England before bouncing around with a number of teams including the Steelers, Cardinals, Browns, Texans and Bears.

Hoyer signed a two-year, $12 million contract that included $10 million guaranteed with the 49ers in March of 2017 but was cut loose in the first year of his deal.

The Patriots signed him to a three-year deal shortly after being cut by San Francisco and was entering the final year of his contract when New England released him last offseason.

He signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Colts in September of last year and was set to earn base salaries of $2 million and $2.5 million over the final two years of his deal.

In 2019, Hoyer appeared in four games for the Colts and recorded 35 completions on 65 pass attempts (53.8 percent) for 372 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions, to go along with eight rushing attempts for two yards, two fumbles, and one fumble lost.
