Dolphins Sign CB Chimdi Chekwa & WR A.J. Cruz

The Miami Dolphins announced that they’ve signed CB Chimdi Chekwa and WR A.J. Cruz on Friday.

Chekwa, 27, is a former fourth-round pick of the Raiders back in 2011. He re-signed with the Raiders back in May of last year, but was not tendered a contract as a restricted free agent this past offseason.

Chekwa briefly joined the Patriots for a few more before later returning to the Raiders following this year’s NFL Draft. Oakland wound up releasing him from injured reserve in recent weeks.

In 2014, Chekwa appeared in 10 games for the Raiders and recorded 16 tackles and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him down for playing 89 total snaps last season.

Cruz, 24, signed on with the Arizona Rattlers after going undrafted out of Brown a few years ago. he appeared in 11 games for Arizona and recorded five receptions for 24 yards receiving and a touchdowns while contributing 1,305 kick return yards.

The Bears signed him to a contract back in July of last year, but he was unfortunately waived with the injury designation at the start of the 2015 season.

Cruz will likely have to compete for a roster spot in offseason workouts and training camp.
