Eagles Picking Up DE Derek Barnett’s Fifth-Year Option

Jimmy Kempski of PhillyVoice reports that the Eagles will exercise DE Derek Barnett‘s fifth-year option for the 2021 season.

The fifth-year option should cost the Eagles around $10 million for the 2021 season. However, this figure is guaranteed for injury only and won’t prevent the two parties from negotiating a contract extension over the next year or so.

Barnett, 23, is a former first-round pick of the Eagles back in 2017. He’s currently in the final year of his four-year, $12.85 million contract that includes $12.85 million guaranteed and set to make a base salary of $2.21 million for the 2020 season.

In 2019, Barnett appeared in 14 games for the Eagles and recorded 30 tackles, 6.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 83 edge rusher out of 107 qualifying players.
