Lions Intend To Be “Players” In Free Agency?

Lions’ general manager Martin Mayhew told reporters on Thursday that he expects to be “players” in free agency this year.

“We were non-players in free agency last year,” Mayhew said, per Tim Twentyman. “I do think that we plan to make some moves.”

The Lions have already created an additional $8.5 million in cap space by releasing Titus Young, Stephen Peterman and Kyle Vanden Bosch this week and Twentyman adds that more cuts could be coming.

Renegotiating Matthew Stafford‘s contract could also free up extra cash that could use towards keeping some of their soon-to-be free agents like DE Cliff Avril, CB Chris Houston and S Louis Delmas.

Detroit could obviously use some additional help at a number of positions such as running back, wide receiver, defensive end, linebacker defensive back. We’ll have to see how much money they clear in the coming weeks before we have a better idea who they could be targeting in free agency.

  1. Avril can go to hell. Let that dude walk! He’s not gonna come down from the number he wanted last season, and he really wasn’t that productive this year. Shoulda let him walk last year and went after Mario Williams

    • He can go to hell? A little harsh. I’m sure the Lions have a maximum number in mind for him. THey will probably let him see what the market offers him. It probably won’t be as high as he is hoping.
