Lions Promote RB Jonathan Williams & G Kenny Wiggins From Practice Squad

The Detroit Lions promoted G Kenny Wiggins and RB Jonathan Williams from their practice squad to the active roster.

Williams, 26, is a former fifth-round pick of the Bills back in 2016. He was in the second year of his four-year, $2.58 million contract when the Bills waived him coming out of the preseason.

Williams had a brief stint on to the Broncos’ practice squad before joining the Saints in 2018. New Orleans cut Williams coming out of the preseason last year and he had a brief stint on their practice squad before he was signed to the Colts’ taxi squad. He was later promoted to the active roster.

The Lions signed him to a contract back in August but was among their final roster cuts and joined their practice squad.

In 2019, Williams appeared in nine games and rushed for 235 yards on 49 carries (4.8 YPC) and one touchdown. He also caught five passes for 59 yards.

Wiggins, 31, wound up signing on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent out of Fresno State back in 2011. He lasted just a few months with the team before he was signed to the Ravens’ practice squad at the start of the 2011 season.

Wiggins would later return to San Francisco during his rookie year before ending up with the Chargers at the start of the 2013 season. He has spent the past five years with the Chargers before joining the Lions for the 2018 season.

The Lions signed him to a two-year contract in August of 2018 and re-signed to a one-year deal this offseason.

In 2019, Wiggins appeared in 14 games for the Lions, making three starts for the team.
