NFC East Notes: Eagles, Giants, Redskins

Eagles

According to Eagles WR DeSean Jackson, his relationship with GM Howie Roseman never fractured even following Jackson’s release five years ago.

“One thing I can say about Howie Roseman, we always had a great relationship,” Jackson said via Pro Football Talk. “Even when I went on and played in Washington and played in Tampa Bay, anytime I was able to see him on the field pregame, he always came up and just gave me a hug. Once again, it was a bittersweet situation. We all know how I was released.”

  • According to NBC Sports’ Reuben Frank, DT Malik Jackson‘s contract with the Eagles includes a $9 million signing bonus, $1 million and $4.6 million fully guaranteed in base salary in 2019 and 2020 respectively, and a $2.4 million option.
  • While the deal is a five-year deal, the 2022 and 2023 years are just dummy years for cap purposes.
  • If the Eagles exercise Jackson’s option before 2020, it prorates over the remaining four years of the deal.  If they don’t, the $2.4 million is added to Jackson’s $7.6 million 2020 base salary and makes him an unrestricted free agent after the season.
  • Either way, the Eagles should set themselves up to receive a compensatory pick after Jackson leaves in either two or three years.

Giants

  • According to Pat Leonard, Giants QB Eli Manning‘s $5 million bonus was activated on Sunday, the fifth day of the new league year.
  • SNY’s Ralph Vacchiano says the Giants aren’t focused on a quarterback the same way they were locked on RB Saquon Barkley last year and could address other needs with their two first-round picks.
  • Vacchiano says the Giants might not like either Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray or Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins enough to trade up from No. 6.
  • While the Giants could consider either Missouri QB Drew Lock or Duke QB Daniel Jones at No. 17, Vacchiano says there will likely be offensive or defensive linemen there that draw GM Dave Gettleman‘s eye.
  • Cardinals QB Josh Rosen could also be another option, but Vacchiano says a Giants source tells him it’s not clear if Rosen is available yet.  Vacchiano’s impression is Rosen was New York’s third or fourth-ranked quarterback of the five first-rounders a year ago.

Redskins

New Redskins S Landon Collins pushed back against the characterization that he had a limited skill set as a player and that’s why the Giants moved on.

“I laugh, honestly, because I’m not just a box safety,” Collins said, via Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post. “I make plays in the box, yeah, but I make plays in other places, too. People see me in the box because that’s what teams ask me to do sometimes. Pretty much it’s people that don’t know what they’re talking about. When I get the opportunity to show that I can play different spots, I will.”

  1. My post is in defense of Landon Collins.

These following quotes were made by Chris Schisler of GMEN HQ in 2015 prior to the 2015 NFL DRAFT.

“Landon Collins is an AGGRESSIVE player who has the REQUISITE COVER SKILLS and the PHYSICALITY of an AGGRESSIVE nature to be a great in the box safety. Landon Collins is NOT A ONE DIMENSIONAL PLAYER, and that is why Landon Collins COULD be a TOP 10 PICK when all is said and done.”

“HIGH FOOTBALL IQ: Landon Collins UNDERSTANDS route concepts and Landon Collins CAN SEE THEM COMING FROM A MILE AWAY. Landon Collins is GOOD AT FOLLOWING THE QBS EYES TO THE FOOTBALL and takes GOOD ANGLES to the ball carrier. ALL OF THESE THINGS INDICATE A HIGH FOOTBALL I.Q.”

“GMEN HQ BIG BOARD RANKING: Landon Collins is the 8TH OVERALL PROSPECT.

Now! In all REALITY!!!!! These comments have EXACTLY described Landon Collins’ play for the GMEN in all four seasons from 2015-2018. Watch the tapes!

Landon Collins in the 2018 offseason was asked specifically by numerous sports ANALysts. How he meaning Collins felt learning and playing in new HC Bettcher’s defensive scheme? Collins response was the following: “I meaning Collins am used to this type of defense from his days at ‘Bama. The defense is aggressive and allows all of us on the defensive unit to play football and get after it.”

That comment does NOT sound like a player that has limitations in his repertoire for playing his position. Collins career and individual numbers are proof. An ALL-PRO and 3 PRO BOWLS. And Collins never had a worth while free safety to partner with in all 4 seasons. Darian Thompson was a waste of a third rounder and Curtis Riley is a CB playing safety.

Yet! Gettleman kept Collins for the entire 2018 year to evaluate Collins and decided it was in the GMEN best interest to let Collins just walk at the end of this season.

Also! I’m sure Gettleman can justify reviewing Elisha Manning’s 2018 season and feeling with UTMOST confidence, that Elisha Manning deserved his 2019 $5M roster bonus, 2019 $11M+ in salary and the 2019 $23.2M cap hit.

Landon Collins could have been TRANSITION tagged at $9.5M for 2019 and a long term deal could have been ironed out from that point. Instead Gettleman and Mara chose to use a PATHETIC EXCUSE that Landon Collins is a LIABILITY in pass coverage and Collins is NOT a fit in DC Bettcher’s defense. The whole excuse does NOT make any sense. Now! Gettleman tries to replace Collins via the Beckham trade with Jabrill Peppers. Although Peppers is multi-talented, Peppers is NOT an upgrade over Collins and Peppers’ biggest FLAW is in pass coverage.

    GREAT LOGIC! on Gettleman’s part.
