Commanders

• The Commanders landed WR Stefon Diggs as a free agent on Wednesday. NOTUS’ Martenzie Johnson, citing a source close to Diggs, reports that the veteran chose to sign with Washington because of QB Jayden Daniels and WR Terry McLaurin: “[He wanted a] chance to play with one of best young [quarterbacks] and opposite one of [the] best receivers — and to do it all at home,” 
• ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler mentioned Commanders TE Chigoziem Okonkwo is tracking to be the de facto No. 2 receiver behind Terry McLaurin, who told Fowler: “He’s a tight end who really runs routes like a receiver.” This was before the team signed Diggs, though. 
• Daniels made it a priority to add more body armor and bulked up a bit to ensure he has a healthier season, per Fowler. 
• Matt Zenitz reports that the Commanders are hiring former Browns pass game specialist Nick Charlton as an offensive assistant.
• Diggs spoke on signing with the Commanders: “I’m just super blessed to have this opportunity. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve remained faithful to the process. Alignment is real, and here I am back home. I’m humbled and thankful to be back where it all started.” (Josina Anderson)

Cowboys

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has held the general manager title for his team for three decades. While he quickly built a reputation as impulsive and a gambler, that perception hasn’t matched reality for a while. Dallas has been on the conservative side when it comes to roster building and team management for the better part of the last 10 years. However, Jones has been giving signs lately that he’s rethinking things, pointing to the Rams in a recent interview as a model for the Cowboys to potentially copy. 

“I would look at that and use a parallel and say, ‘We’ve got Dak,'” Jones said via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. “Okay, where can we be more aggressive in looking at what the Rams have done? Or for that matter looking at what New England has done. I’m unabashed about sitting down and visiting with the competition about how they’re doing it and how they’re doing it better. I continue to do it.”

Perhaps Jones is feeling the urgency of the team’s championship drought even more as he forges ahead into his 80s. Perhaps he also sees that the window they have with 33-year-old QB Dak Prescott isn’t going to stay open forever. Whatever the reason, Jones has been open in the early days of training camp about his Super Bowl expectations and what he’s willing to do to maximize Dallas’ chances. 

“Well first of all we’ve been close, in my opinion, several times and we didn’t get there,” Jones said. “So the odds are it’s going to come up more than it’s not going to come up in my mind, number one. Number two, I like what we’ve got in our coaching staff, I like what we’ve got in the makeup of our players, I think we’re extraordinarily sound in the way we’re approaching all sides of the ball.”

“It’s unquestionably founded on the fact that, in my mind, we’re not hanging by a thread any place. Are we going to have to improve as we go along as a team? Of course we are. But if we do have what I think is a non-aggressive or non-overly optimistic idea about how we’re going to improve, I think we can be a contender.” 

Eagles

• Jeff McLane reports that RT Lane Johnson has missed the last four practices for a non-injury-related reason and is expected to return soon.
• Eagles DC Vic Fangio said they are having CB Michael Carter learn the safety, nickel, and sixth defensive back role: “Michael’s had a good camp so far. He might be the only guy — I’d have to think — he’s learning three positions. He’s playing safety, nickel, and when we do go to our six-DB stuff, he’s the sixth DB in there. I think he’s had a very good camp and has done nothing but helped himself and not eliminating himself from anything. Safety, he’s progressing nicely.” (Zach Berman)
• Fangio said second-year S Andrew Mukuba is showing quicker reaction time this offseason compared to his rookie campaign: “It’s just experience, knowledge and know-how of the defense. You might look and say, ‘Man, he looks quicker. He’s in better shape. This, that–‘ I think it’s just the thought process [speeding] up, comfortability with the defense and what he has to do. He’s in a little bit better shape too.” (Berman)
• Fangio added that DT Uar Bernard and EDGE Josh Weru are “light years” away from being ready while complimenting LB Chance Campbell, believing he has a chance to make the roster: “Don’t sleep on him.” (McLane)
• The Eagles signed DL Jalen Carter to a four-year, $152 million contract extension with $40.8 million guaranteed at signing, an additional $30 million scheduled to vest next March, and $106.8 million in practical guarantees over the first four years.
• Carter’s extension also includes five option bonuses and four void years for salary cap purposes.
• The deal results in cap hits of $9.1 million in 2026, $9.5 million in 2027, $15.5 million in 2028, $22.2 million in 2029, $29.4 million in 2030, $26.2 million in 2031, and a $68.1 million void-year charge in 2032. (Spotrac)

Giants

Giants DT Darius Alexander enters the second year of his career after being a third-round pick in 2025. New York DC Dennard Wilson‘s task for Alexander is to have him “grow up” as a player.

“It’s Year 2. As a football player, he’s going to have to grow up. [Defensive line coach] Dennis Johnson has done a great job of working on his base, his technique, his fundamentals, having his feet and hands tied together. And now it’s about just being gritty and grimy, having that old dirty bastard-type mentality. Because the talent is there, and it’ll start to really show. I want him to be a run-stopper first before pass rusher,” Wilson said, via Steve Serby of the New York Post. 

• Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. talked about fighting for a roster spot in camp, saying he likes the pressure because he wants to step up to the moment. He said he could live with not making the team if he gives his best effort and feels he did everything in his power to earn a spot. (Jordan Raanan)
