NFC West Notes: 49ers, Seahawks, Brandon Marshall

49ers

49ers LB Reuben Foster returned to the team after his domestic violence charges were dropped last week.

“He’s in great shape,” 49ers DC Robert Saleh told reporters on Wednesday, via Pro Football Talk. “He could have [practiced] today. He could have went the first day he was allowed back. But, just like all the other guys, they’ve had a due process of Phase One, Phase Two, going through the different phases of the offseason. So, we’re just giving him a chance to get back into it. Don’t rush him. There’s no need. Hopefully we can get him back to practicing soon.”

“[I]f he gets one snap of practice it’ll be more than what he got a year ago,” Saleh said. “So we’re excited he’s here. We’re excited that he’s working. We’re excited that he’s in meetings. He’s excited. The guys, his teammates are excited. Getting him up to speed won’t take as long and I promise you, when he gets out there, he’s going to be like a fireball. That’ll be cool to see.”

Seahawks

New Seahawks OC Brian Schottenheimer says they’re keeping around 70 percent of their old offense, but the 30 percent being added is “noticeably different.”

If you put a number on it I’d say it’s probably 70 percent of what they’ve done here and then maybe 30 percent of ideas from Mike and myself and some of the new guys,” Schottenheimer said, via the Seattle Times. “It’d be crazy to ask some of the guys to learn a completely new system. I’ve been working extremely hard trying to get up to speed with the way they’ve done things. They’ve had so much success here that was easy for me to do. I’m excited about some of the things that we’ve added both in the run and pass game. I think that’ll be something that is noticeably different. It’s a comprehensive approach.”

Brandon Marshall

New Seahawks WR Brandon Marshall admitted that he didn’t have a lot of options available to him as a free agent and he understands why some feel he could be done as a player.

“I didn’t have a ton of options,” Marshall said, via ESPN.com. “I think the sentiment around the league is that I’m done, and I get it. Rightfully so. When you get on the other side of 30 and your production slips and you have a big injury, people just count you out. So it was an interesting process. It was a humbling process, to say the least. There were some really tough days that I had to push through, mentally and physically, so for this to be an opportunity and come to [fruition], you can’t ask for a better situation. You’ve got probably a top-three quarterback, you’ve got one the best franchises, you’ve got a young nucleus, guys that are hungry and ready to compete.

  • Marshall said he originally intended to put the toe surgery off until he was retired, but ankle surgery offered enough rehab time to also recover from the toe procedure.
  • Regarding his ankle injury, Marshall said that he began running pain-free prior to the Giants releasing him with a failed physical designation and hopes to be fully recovered by training camp: “I feel good. I don’t feel great.” (Brady Henderson)
