NFL Notes: Bills, Chargers, Dolphins, Eagles, Titans

Bills

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Bills HC Doug Marrone has a three-day window to opt out of his contract.

Adam Schefter mentioned that if Marrone were to be available, he could be one of the most sought after head coaching candidates.

Some people have suggested that he wouldn’t go without having a head-coaching opportunity, to which I would say, if Doug Marrone is on the market, he doesn’t have to know if there will be one: there will be one,” Schefter said. “Because when he was coming out a couple years back and interviewing along with the likes of Chip Kelly and Bill O’Brien, there were a couple of different executives that told me that they thought that Doug Marrone would be the most successful head coach of that bunch.

“If Doug Marrone were to hit the marketplace tomorrow, to me, he instantly becomes maybe the top guy on the street available for another team to hire and I think he’d get action right away. Right away.”

Chargers

The Chargers and QB Philip Rivers are taking a “wait-and-see approach” regarding this back injury, but offseason surgery remains a possibility.

“It just does me no good to say on the record what it was,” Rivers said, via Union-Tribune San Diego. “I was dealing with sore ribs. I was dealing with the back. Exactly what that was, really, who cares? What I mean is I don’t see the reason for it.

“It had no effect on my performance, good or bad the last few weeks; it really didn’t. The back maybe was a little tougher over the last few weeks, but it wasn’t, ‘If I didn’t have a bad back, I would have made the throw.’ That was never the case. … I felt good enough to play.

Dolphins

WR Mike Wallace said he isn’t sure if he’ll be back with the Dolphins next season.

“I’m not the general manager or anything, or the head coach,” Wallace said, via Chris Perkins of the Sun Sentinel. “I’m not sure.”

Eagles

Eagles HC Chip Kelly said he hopes to re-sign WR Jeremy Maclin during the offseason.

We are going to have a long, full process for this whole thing,” Kelly said. “But do I want LeSean back? Yeah. Do I want Jeremy back? Yeah. Is that the reality? I don’t know. . . . What if someone gives us 17 first-round draft picks for LeSean? . . . We’ll look at everything.

Zach Berman of Philadelphia Inquirer suggests that the Eagles could consider using their franchise tag on Maclin to prevent him from signing elsewhere.

Titans

  • Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean doesn’t see the Titans drafting either Florida State QB Jameis Winston or Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 overall pick.
  • Instead, Wyatt mentions that Zach Mettenberger as the “leading candidate” to be the Titans’ starting quarterback in 2015.
