NFL Notes: QB Market, Cowboys, Dolphins, Packers

QB Market

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports takes a shot a predicting how the 2018 quarterback market will play in the coming months.

Here’s how La Canfora sees things playing out:

  • Redskins transition tag Kirk Cousins. According to La Canfora, the Jets are the team he believes will make the more most concerted effort to sign Cousins this offseason, even though he could draw interest from teams including the Browns, Broncos and Cardinals.
  • Drew Brees signs a three-year contract with the Saints.
  • Chiefs trade Alex Smith to the Browns.
  • Vikings transition tag Case Keenum and re-sign Teddy Bridgewater.
  • Bills trade Tyrod Taylor to the Broncos.
  • Giants retain Eli Manning as their starting quarterback.
  • Jaguars bring back Blake Bortles under his fifth-year option worth $19 million.
  • Dolphins keep Ryan Tannehill in place as their starter.
  • Cardinals sign veteran QB Sam Bradford.
  • 49ers franchise Jimmy Garoppolo before eventually signing him to a long-term extension.

We have a few of these quarterbacks featured in our Top 100 – 2018 NFL Free Agents list.

Cowboys

  • Cowboys executive Stephen Jones said that the team will focus on re-signing their own free agents and focus on building through the NFL Draft: “We just really need to focus on this draft, do well in the draft, and then work the edges and work the opportunities we may see come our way that would improve our football team.” (Brandon George)
  • Jones added that the team will not alter their approach to free agency, which is to build a roster through the draft and add depth in free agency. (Brandon George)
  • Regarding Cowboys DE Randy Gregory being reinstated from suspension, Jones said that there’s “no update” on his status. (Drew Davison)
  • Cowboys S Kavon Frazier recently underwent knee surgery but it is not expected to keep him out of the offseason program. (Drew Davison)

Dolphins

  • Dolphins GM Chris Grier said that former second-round LB Raekwon McMillan’s recovery from a torn ACL “is right at or ahead of schedule” and they expect him to be available for OTAs. (Adam Beasley)

Packers

New Packers DC Mike Pettine said he is not interested in getting another heading coach job and instead prefers being a coordinator.

When I was the head coach, I didn’t enjoy the lack of interaction with the actual football part of it,” Pettine said, via the Packers’ official site. “I always made the comparison of going from being the teacher to now you’re the principal. As a coordinator [you’re] 90 percent football and 10 percent administrative stuff. That essentially flipped and I didn’t like it.”
