Panthers Will Decide Starting QB By Next Week

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said on Monday that he will being naming the teams starting quarterback before next Monday, via  Charlotte Observer. Rivera added that he would like to another games worth action from both Jimmy Clausen and Cam Newton before deciding on the teams week 1 starter.

Both players had their up’s and down’s in the teams first preseason game against the Giants. Clausen had bigger pro’s and con’s as he threw a pick-six and a touchdown later in the game while Newton stayed in the pocket and tried to showcase his ability to move the ball through the air. The fact that Newton didn’t rely on his legs to get first downs seems like an effort to address the critics who said that his ability to be a pocket was exactly what was going to determine his success in the NFL.

Jimmy Clausen took the majority of first-team snaps during Monday’s practice while Newton larger worked with the second-team. It would appear as though Clausen has the slight edge but it would only take a few good plays in week 2’s game to put him ahead of Clausen.
