Patriots Trading DE Michael Bennett To Cowboys

Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots are trading veteran DE Michael Bennett to the Cowboys for a seventh-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, which can turn into a sixth-round selection.

It was clear that Bennett’s time in New England was going to be coming to an end at some point in the near future.

The Patriots recently suspended Bennett for one game due to conduct deemed detrimental to the team after he let it be known that he was not pleased with his role.

Bennett just recently returned to the team, but indications were that a move was likely coming.

Ben Volin notes that this trade should clear about $2.6 million in cap space for the Patriots.

Bennett, 33, began his NFL career with the Buccaneers and spent four years in Tampa Bay before signing on with the Seahawks as a free agent back in 2013. Seattle signed him to a new four-year, $39 million contract before trading him to the Eagles last year.

After a year in Philadelphia, the Eagles traded Bennett to the Patriots this offseason for a 2020 fifth-round pick.

Bennett signed a two-year, $16.75 million deal with the Patriots that included a $4 million signing bonus. He stands to make base salaries of $3 million and $7 million over the next two years.

In 2019, Bennett has appeared in six games for the Patriots and recorded five tackles and 2.5 sacks.
