Former Raiders WR Tim Brown mentioned onย Fridayโs Pro Football Talk Liveย that San Antonio could be a more viable location for the team than many would have thought.
โIโll tell you, the wild card here, I believe, is San Antonio,” Brown said. “I know people donโt want to hear that, but from what Iโm hearing the package that San Antonio put on the table was far better than any package they could have ever imagined. So financially the best thing for the team may be to go to San Antonio. I know that would hurt a lot of Raiders fans in California but at the same time, this team has to find a home and if Oakland and L.A. canโt get it done, then maybe San Antonioโs the place.โ
Even so, Brown believes theย Raidersย should stay inย Oakland if at all possible.
โI think they should stay in Oakland if at all possible and I know thatโs what the team is trying to do,โ Brown said. โTheyโre trying to work out a deal to stay there, but itโs tough because the city of Oakland doesnโt have the funds to get it done and it seems like to everybody that really L.A. is trying to woo any team.ย
Jason Cole of the Bleacher Reportย mentioned earlier in the day that the Raiders can’t afford to move there themselves. Theย Rose Bowl has reportedly told the Raiders that they don’t want to host them on an interim basis, which means they will need to work with another team to make a move to L.A.ย work.
Officials from San Antonio have met with Raiders owner Mark Davis on multiple occasions, but the meetings have beenย downplayed in terms of their seriousness.
NFL teams have used San Antonio for years to help their ongoing negotiations with their respective cities, so this is an important consideration.
Beyond that, it’s hard to say if Brown’s sources are reliable with the information about San Antonio’s offer to the Raiders, but it’s becoming increasing clear that they will have to keep their options open in the coming months until they’ve found the best situation for their franchise.
