Titans Picking Up QB Marcus Mariota’s Fifth-Year Option

On Wednesday, Titans GM Jon Robinson mentioned during an interview with Midday 180 (per Paul Kuharsky) that they plan to pick up QB Marcus Mariota‘s fifth-year option before the May deadline.

“The plan is over the next couple of days to exercise Marcus Mariota’s fifth-year option,” Robinson said. “He is an important part of this team, as are a lot of players.

“We’re excited to have him around here for the next couple of years and hopefully after the next season we can start to figure something out to keep him around even longer.”

This news shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. The fifth-year option will cost the Titans’ $20.922 million for the 2019 season.

It’s worth mentioning that the fifth-year option is only guaranteed for injury and won’t prevent the two parties from working on a long-term extension in the next year or so.

Mariota, 24, is a former No. 2 overall pick of the Titans back in 2015.  He’s currently in the third year of his four-year, $24.214 million rookie contract that’s fully guaranteed and is set to make a base salary of $2,636,270 to go along with another $3,736,905 next year.

In 2017, Mariota has appeared in 15 games and thrown for 3,232 yards while completing 62 percent of his passes to go along with 13 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He has also rushed for 312 yards and five touchdowns. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 12 quarterback out of 39 qualifying players.
