AFC Notes: Chiefs, Raiders, Texans

Chiefs

Last week, the Chiefs’ pass protection was clearly an issue for their offense and QB Patrick Mahomes, but HC Andy Reid views the problems as fixable.

“We saw a little bit of that last year,” Reid said, via ESPN.com. “We went through a funk. … You go through slumps. You’ve got to work through those. It happens to every offensive line and every offensive lineman.

Chiefs OL coach Andy Heck added that they expect a lot out of this group, seeing as it’s one of the more experienced groups on the team.

“We’ve got a high standard,” Heck said. “We’ve been a young line in the past, but right now, we’re one of the older, more experienced groups on this team. So we expect a lot out of those guys.

“We’re very concerned as a line but not overly so. We’ve got some work to do. This is training camp. This is part of the process.”

Raiders

Raiders HC Jon Gruden mentioned during an interview with Sirius XM NFL Radio that they’re “working on” an extension for DE Khalil Mack.

“This is a negotiation,” Gruden said. “Joel Segal is Khalil’s agent. They’ve got their plan. General Manager Reggie McKenzie and the people negotiating on our end have a plan. I’m coaching the team. At this time, he’s not here, and we have to focus on what we can control, and that’s just working.”

Texans

  • Aaron Wilson reports that former Texans OT Derek Newton filed a grievance for a $500,000 roster bonus he was due on April 1 if he passed a team physical.
  • The Texans elected to release Newton on April 12 with a failed physical designation.
  • According to Wilson, Newton’s grievance is pending and currently counts $200,000 against their salary cap.
