AFC South Notes: Jacoby Brissett, Andrew Luck, Texans, Titans

Jacoby Brissett

Colts owner Jim Irsay considers Jacoby Brissett to be “the best backup quarterback in football” and wouldn’t trade him for a first-round pick.

“All of a sudden, we have the best backup quarterback in football,” Irsay said, via the Indianapolis Star. “I don’t think we’d accept a (first-round pick in a trade) for him, we think he’s that good.

Andrew Luck

Colts owner Jim Irsay believes the shoulder issues Andrew Luck has experienced has made him a “better football player.”

“Trust me when I say this,” Irsay tells the Indianapolis Star, “it’s made him a better football player, and a better man, a guy in the end who is going to give us even a better chance for greatness. I really felt confident that this guy was going to be back on the field [last year]. I, like many of our fans, didn’t expect him to miss the season he missed. That was a surprise. A surprise to him, too.”

Irsay still thinks Luck can be one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

He has a fire burning deep in his heart and his soul to win, and to really kick some butt,” Irsay said. “Really deep inside of him. That is what you look for, that is what you want in guys like that.”

Texans

Texans HC Bill O’Brien said RB D’Onta Foreman is “heading in the right direction” in regards to his Achilles injury.

I think he’s progressing well,” O’Brien said, via the Houston Chronicle. “I think he’s doing well. He’s on the right track, and we’ll see. We’ll see how it goes, but I think he’s headed in the right direction.”

Texans GM Brian Gaine admitted that Foreman is still a work in progress” right now.

“Work in progress right now, recovering from his injury,” Gaine said. “We need a little bit more time to determine if he’s going to be ready for the season. We’re not there at that stage. We think he’s getting better. He’s improving, but time will tell whether he’s available to us when we kick off.

Titans

On Saturday, the Titans signed S Kenny Vaccaro to a one-year contract (NFLTR).

Regarding the move, Titans HC Mike Vrabel said Vaccaro had a great safety workout and he’s looking forward to getting him in the mix at practice and expects to get him reps against the Packers on Thursday.

“I think he had a great workout. That was an impressive safety workout that we had. They did a great job, all those guys that were able to come in. So what we expect is that he’s a pro, and he comes in and learns what to do quickly. We’ll work him in there and see where he can help us. He’s made plays in the National Football League, and it seems like he’s starting off with a great attitude,” Vrabel said, via TitanInsider.com. “He’s got a unique skill set. He’s got good size, good speed and he had a great workout. There were times I think last year that he didn’t look like himself from early on in his career when he was a first-rounder, but we were excited to see him to the things we asked from him in the workout. He’s already started studying.”

Vaccaro explained that he was waiting for the right opportunity.

“This has been a long time coming for me. I was waiting on the right opportunity. I was fortunate that one opened up here and that we could get a deal done. I’m ready to work,” Vaccaro said.
