Broncos Placing OLB Shaq Barrett, TE Jake Butt & QB Chad Kelly On NFI List

The Denver Broncos are placing QB Chad Kelly, OLB Shaq Barrett and TE Jake Butt on the non-football injury list to open training camp, according to Nicki Jhabvala.

  • The Broncos will also add Kyle Peko to the PUP list.
  • Denver also waived LB Josh Banderas with a non-football injury designation.

Barrett suffered a serious hip injury back in May while working out on his own and was expected to be out two or three months.

Butt previously mentioned that he expects to start the season on an injury list, given that he’s working his way back from a torn ACL, so this does not come as a surprise.

Barrett, 24, wound up signing on with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State back in 2014. He was on and off of their practice squad during his rookie season but managed to make the 53-man roster in each of the past two seasons.

The Broncos re-signed Barrett to a one-year, $615,000 exclusive rights contract a month ago.

In 2016, Barrett appeared in all 16 games for the Broncos and recorded 36 tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two pass defenses. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 28 edge defender out of 109 qualifying players.

Butt, 22, was drafted by the Broncos in the fifth-round of this year’s draft out of Michigan. Before he suffered an ACL injury last season, Butt was considered a first-round talent and one of the best tight ends in a very deep class.

During his college career at Michigan, Butt caught 138 passes for 1,646 yards receiving and 11 touchdowns over the course of 43 games.
